When a photo has embedded GPS, finding its location is a metadata job, not a guessing game. Here is the iPhone workflow.
Find a photo location on iPhone
Choose the original image in Photo Location Finder. The app looks for GPS coordinates in the file, then resolves them into a readable place. You can review the exact latitude and longitude alongside city, country, and nearby reference information.
Why photos lose location data
- Some messaging and social platforms resize or re-export images.
- Screenshots do not carry the original camera's GPS metadata.
- Camera location permission may have been disabled when the image was taken.
- Some cameras and editing tools never write GPS into the file.
What to do when GPS is missing
Keep the original file and check the photo in Apple's Photos app. For future camera photos, enable Location Services for Camera. If the original data is gone, a metadata reader cannot reconstruct it. A visual AI estimate is a different workflow and should be labeled as an estimate.
